There was a run on the bank

Everybody was out for blood

Well my granddaddy made me nervous
Sometimes he seemed to read my mind
Even now I remember how
He used to look me in the eye
He said son I’ll tell you a story
This one’ll burn off both your ears
What happened here when I was your age
Has stayed with me all through the years

Well back then we had no tourists
No Internet no satellite
But we could walk leave our doors unlocked
Go out to dance on Friday night
And if there was something important
Our leaders wanted us to hear
They’d send a message over shortwave

Then one morning with no warning
Town crier in the square
Women and children were running everywhere
There were bankers and lawyers
The farm was being foreclosed
We lit out on the road
