Track Name: Cowboys Hit Town
There was a run on the bank
The day the cowboys hit town
And lightning struck the water tank
And knocked it flat on the ground
There was a power failure and a flash flood
Everybody was out for blood
And the ground shook for miles around
The day the cowboys hit town

Well my granddaddy made me nervous
Sometimes he seemed to read my mind
Even now I remember how
He used to look me in the eye
He said son I’ll tell you a story
This one’ll burn off both your ears
What happened here when I was your age
Has stayed with me all through the years

Well back then we had no tourists
No Internet no satellite
But we could walk leave our doors unlocked
Go out to dance on Friday night
And if there was something important
Our leaders wanted us to hear
They’d send a message over shortwave
And we had nothing to fear

Then one morning with no warning
Town crier in the square
Women and children were running everywhere
There were bankers and lawyers
The farm was being foreclosed
We lit out on the road

Well I guess we had good reasons
To think about it at the time
But mineral rights and construction sites
Were just the last things on our minds
Lucky for me your grandmother
Had a little something put aside
This is the house you grew up in
And we’ve lived here all of our lives
Track Name: My Neighbourhood
In my neighbourhood
Even landlords are losing their shirts
Growing up in their buildings
Kids gotta be cool and stay alert
In my neighbourhood
In my neighbourhood
Welcome to my neighbourhood

Down at the South Phoenix
There’s a contest on Saturday night
And everybody’s a winner
When they’re losing their minds in the neon light
In my neighbourhood
In my neighbourhood
This is my neighbourhood

It used to be peaceful and calm
Before times got so hard
Now this part of town’s like a bomb
Ticking down quietly right in your backyard

Then one day last summer
A little girl was stolen away
And the police came runnin’
But as usual they were too late

And they searched all our houses
Just as if they were doin’ some good
And we all felt much safer
Down here in our neighbourhood

In our neighbourhood
This is our neighbourhood
Welcome to our neighbourhood
Track Name: She Sees Me As I Am
Her voice was an icicle piercing my ear
It froze up my tropical dream
I was miles and miles and miles away
And that’s where I wanted to be
I told her that we would live footloose and free
I’d take her all over the world

She knows all my scams
And the boy inside the man
Well I am cursed and blessed and damned
Cause she sees me as I am

My life was an accident waiting in line
To cut the umbilical cord
After years and tears and fears I find
I still don’t know when or what for
You spend all your youth looking for that big score
And lose what you had at the start

She sees through that sham
And I know her fears and plans
And she is cursed and blessed and damned
Cause she sees me as I am

Head like a rock- heart of glass
My jaws are set like a stubborn ass
Words so sharp they leave a scar
Sometimes it’s best just to play guitar
Maybe I better just play guitar

Oh but she’s learned that flim flam
And watched the master’s magic hands
Well I am cursed and blessed and damned
Cause through all my best-laid plans
She still sees me as I am
Track Name: Boneyard
I used to live in a palace
With a long marble hall
Now I sleep in the alleys
Up by the shopping mall
Hung out with movers and shakers
When the profits were high
But there were too many takers
And the well ran dry
I always heard if you just work hard
Your reward will come to you one day
Come on down and see me in this boneyard
And you might have something different to say

Well I declared independence
Declared bankruptcy
But I don’t want no assistance
Don’t need your company
But from the moment I got here
No-one looks in my face
I think they all share the same fear
Of falling from grace

I always heard if you just work hard
Your reward will come to you one day
Well come on down and see me in this boneyard
And you might have something different to say

If I can get to the subway
I can stay dry all day
I can’t escape cause I can’t pay
So I’ll sleep on the grate

I always heard if you just work hard
Your reward will come to you one day
Well come on down and see me in this boneyard
And you might say something different
Ah come on down and see me in this boneyard
And you might have something different to say
Today
Something different to say
Come on down, come on down
Track Name: Trade Places
You’ve got no pictures hanging on your wall
Your diary’s page on empty page
And the clippings in your scrapbook are all
Yellow with age
Your room contains your life in crates that stack
And overflow into the hall
How come nothing ever gets unpacked?
You just sit staring at the wall

And I would trade
Places in a minute just to see you smile
It would make my day
To hear you laughing for a little while
Want to light the way
And walk beside you for another mile
Cause the road is long
And night can fall so suddenly

Another dawn you hear the cuckoo clock
The morning’s cold and wet and grey
You wonder when you’re gonna catch some luck
Maybe today will be your day
You reminisce about good times long gone
What it was like in sixty-eight
I know your time’s coming from now on
You can forget all your mistakes

Oh and it’s hard to believe
It wasn’t always like this
You get the feeling there’s something
You missed

I would trade
Places in a minute just to see you smile
It would make my day
To hear you laughing for a little while
Want to light the way
And walk beside you for another mile
Cause the road is long
And night can fall so suddenly
Yeah the road is long
And night can fall so suddenly
Track Name: The Tallest Tree
The view from here is spectacular
Clean cloudless mountain air
Reflections from the reservoir
Are flashing everywhere
We’re standing on a precipice
Sheer granite ancient pine
Watch the booms shoot down the flume
And a shadow cross my mind

That the tallest tree can fall
Sacrificed to the chainsaw for the greater good of all
And these peaks of joy we climb
Could crumble in an instant
And the tallest tree can fall

So much for life in the great outdoors
That jungle neighbourhood
A compass couldn’t help us find
Our way out of the woods
We cut a swath across the earth
Uprooted man and beast
And every night the dynamite
Would echo from the east

And the tallest tree can fall
Sacrificed to the chainsaw and a better life for all
And these roads we travel on
The bridge across the distance
And the tallest tree can fall

Explorers on the other side we are out of sight of shore
Navigating to the stars but we still get blown off course
The maps we leave for future use they’re drawn by human hands
Like water from the rivers and riches from the sands
And the tallest tree can fall
Track Name: Cathy's Song
A king without a castle, a queen without a crown
Jesus life gets lonely when you live downtown
Love me ‘til your lust dies keep me up ‘til dawn
I will be your castle if you will be my crown

A kingdom I will keep for you- the woman never lies
Where time is not the enemy and passion never dies
Passion never dies

I am not a racehorse and this is not a race
When your lies become too sweet I’ll wipe that smile off your face
Win me over with the truth the prize is my embrace
I am not a racehorse and this is not a race

I know you think I’m purebred I know you think I’m bold
When a passion catches me I can’t do what I’m told
I feel like I need grooming fast I feel I’m getting old
I am only white brass with a heart of tarnished gold

A kingdom I will keep for you -the woman never lies
Where time is not the enemy and passion never dies
Passion never dies

A king without a castle a queen without a crown
Darling, dreams are precious when you live downtown
Track Name: A Little Success
For those of us who still believe
Something just might save us yet
Flying through the air with the greatest ease
Can be dangerous without a net
We can’t all be astronauts with the right stuff
But we all own a piece of the sky
For better or worse we are bound to this earth
And in all of our dreams we can fly

A little kid back in public school
I was the one out of step
Maybe I was nothing but the devil’s tool
But I didn’t know about that yet
So I found a new world on the ropes and the rings
Worked my routine on parallel bars
Practising rhythm, balance and swinging and
Travelling out to the stars

And Mama she told me “There’s nothing wrong with you
That a little success won’t cure”
I didn’t understand what she meant back then
And I tell you I’m still not sure
But if you could pour a measure of happiness
Like a shot of Tennessee mash
I’d be under that spout with my tongue hanging out
And that’s where I’d invest my cash

Now things don’t always come about
In the most logical ways
Who’d have ever thought a life full of doubt
Could survive a simple act of faith?
As I climb to the top of the tower again
And the ringmaster counts down from five
I offer this prayer to the lords of the air,
Please let this not be my last dive

Well we can’t all be astronauts or go to Top Gun
But there’s more than one way we can fly
So what if the odds are a million to one
You can get off the ground if you try
If you try- oh yeah if you try- come on
Try
Track Name: Tunnel of the Night
There’s a tunnel at the border
Of a country called the night
Until you take that final curve
There is no sign of the morning light
The blackness is so total
You might as well be blind
The tricks you play to find your way
Might just be in your mind

But when you burst into the sun
You know you’ve just begun
You only have so long to get it right
Like a bird trapped in a cage
At the dawn of every day
You have to sing your song to greet the light
At the end of the tunnel of the night

There are guards at every entrance
And there are spies in every room
And you can’t recognize your friends
And nobody even wants to know you
You stare into the camera
The mirror of your soul
You pose with flash and grand panache
This is your leading role

Within each heart a dream burns true
With every beat a day turns around
When you rise you make this old world new

And when you burst into the sun
You know you’ve just begun
You only have so long to get it right
Like a bird trapped in a cage
At the dawn of every day
You have to sing your song to greet the light
At the end of the tunnel of the night
At the end of the tunnel
Of the night
Track Name: Blood of Your Blood
Baby cries over little things
Laughs at the strangest things
She pushes me over the top
But see how the table’s turned
Now look how much she’s learned
Here’s hoping the fun will never stop

Soon she’ll speak in full sentences
Draw out her differences
And kidnap your heart for a kiss
But still as the years roll by
You’ll never wonder why
You ransomed your soul for all of this

Blood of your blood
Flowing through your family tree
Flesh of your flesh
Blood of your blood

You’ll look back from your rocking chair
Years of concern and care
And each one engraved on your face
It seems like another life
Some ancient religious rite
Straight out of another time and place

Blood of your blood
Flowing through your family tree
Flesh of your flesh
Blood of your blood
